Places of Interest In Sumatra, Indonesia





Air Manis 4 kms South of Padang, down the hill and across Batang Arau River is a fishermen village on Padang’s scenic west coast. A rock standing in the water a short distance from the shore is said to be the hull of Malin Kundang’s boat, which shipwrecked in a storm after it was cursed by the defiant young man’s mother.


Bungus 20 kms South of Padang sheltered by a bay, there are two good beaches : Ca¬roli¬na and Karang Tirta.

Anai Resort and Golf Course

Anai Resort and Golf Course. The Anai resort is located in gorgeous natural setting roughly 550 meters above sea level. This resort is incorporating first-class hotel facilities.

Batang Palupuah

Batang Palupuah, 12 km from Bukittinggi, is a refuge for the giant flower Rafflesia arnoldi, blooming only once a year in November. A guide can be obtained from the office at the reserve.

Rimbo Panti Nature Reserve
 
Rimbo Panti Nature Reserve. Just aside the road to Medan, at the distance of 108 kms from Bukittinggi, this nature and wild life reserve where various monkey species and black panther found in here.

Bung Hatta Forest Reserve

Bung Hatta Forest Reserve. Situated 15 kms from Padang in the direction of Solok, known in the past as the Setya Mulya Botanic Garden. The reserve has giant flower Rafflesia arnoldi.

Batu Basurek

Batu Basurek. A stone with inscriptions in the old Palava script of India, bearing the legend of Adityawarman in the year 1347.

The Twin Lakes

The Twin Lakes (Lake Diatas and Lake Dibawah) 65 km from Padang the two lakes, one a little higher than the other are located at +1000 meters above sea level and covered by thick mist. There are seve¬ral cottages and coffee shops in Lake Diatas resort.

Pagaruyung Kingdom

Pagaruyung Kingdom. Situated at the ouskirt of Batusangkar the capital city of Tanah Datar Regency. In the past, it was the seat of the ancient of Minangkabau Kingdom, Pagaruyung : which at the beginning of its history was ruled by a queen named Bundo Kanduang. Relics of that ancient past are still scaffered over the area among them are Batusangkar stone inscriptions found in some areas.
 
Lake Singkarak

Lake Singkarak is surrounded with green hills and mountains, the biggest lake in west 129,70 kms square and lies on the Trans Sumatra between Bukittinggi and Solok regency. It is 36 km from Bukittinggi or 86 km from Padang.

Tanjung Alai

Tanjung Alai. Located at 7 kms Lake Singkarak, enjoy gliding in the fresh and coolness of its air.

Mount Talang tea plantation

Mount Talang tea plantation. 35 km from Padang, one of the highest mountains 2,572 meters above sea level has a green and fresh views. From here you can overlook the beautiful Twin Lakes and Lake Singkarak.

The Mystical Rao-rao

The Mystical Rao-rao. Some 15 kilometers from Batusangkar. A village in which the Minangkabau building style is well preserved.

Belimbing Village

Belimbing Village. Some 20 km from Batusangkar, this traditional village has some beautiful old Minangkabau long houses. Around the village one can enjoy the beauty view and traditional social life of Minang¬kabau matriarchal society.

Tabek Patah

Tabek Patah. 30 kilometers from Batusangkar, is a lookout point in the foothills offering a wide open view on the magnificent central Minangkabau countryside.

Batu Sangkar

Batu Sangkar is 41 km southeast of Bukittinggi, a center of the Minang-kabau culture. Megalithic remains found in the area support the theory of a large community li¬ving in the area some 2000 years ago. Many fascinating historical sites were found at Batu Basurek, a stone with inscriptions in the Palava script of India, bearing the le¬gend Adityawarman, the Emperor of Kanaka Mahindra (the island of gold).
Pariaman has 300 years old traditional houses. Make sure to visit the open council grounds with ancient stone seats, the mosque and hot spring. 

Ngarai Sianok

Ngarai Sianok is a canyon in a city, a steep colorful valley surrounded by 100 meter cliffs. 4 km from Bukittinggi, there are many tunnels and caves made by the Japa¬nese during WW II. The pathway leads to Koto Gadang that is renowned for its fine silver filigree and hand embroidery.

Pandai Sikek village

Pandai Sikek village is 13 km south of Bukit Tinggi and famous for its hand wo¬ving and carving industry. The village has a thousand of looms and turning out richly colored cloth. Carved wooden ornaments and furniture also made here.

Harau Valley

Harau Valley is 15 km northeast Payakumbuh, 100 to 200 meter steep granite walls shelter this 315 ha fertile valley. It is a nature and wildlife reserve, where wild goats and tigers still roam.

Ngalau Indah Cave

Ngalau Indah Cave can be reach on the way from Bukittinggi to Payakumbuh, it has extend deep into the mountainside. The domain of thousands of bats, the main entrance is the outline of an elephant visible on its face. The pats through these caves lead out to the top of the mountain and panoramic views.

Siberut National Park

Siberut National Park: Using a regular ferry, which regularly sail three times a week in the night from Padang (Muara Padang) to Muara Siberut/Muara Sikabaluan/Muara Saibi. The trip takes approximately 10 hours of sailing. Or use an express ferry that tra¬vels every Thursday morning from Padang to the town of Tuapejat in Sipora Island and then further to the southern part of Siberut Island for only four hours of sailing.

Padang

Padang is the capital of West Sumatra; and gateway to the homeland of Minangkabau. Its bustling harbours a crossroads for rubber, cinnamon, coffee, tea and nutmeg. There are Minang houses, prehistoric artifacts, ceramics, manuscripts and modern art. In Kampung Cina (Chinatown) you can wander streets lined with turn-of-the century houses, Chinese herbalist and coffee shops. Good hiking and wonderful views of the city can be had a Bukit Monyet and Gunung Padang.
 
Lake Maninjau

Lake Maninjau Perhaps the most beautiful lake in Sumatra, Maninjau is far smaller and less developed thas its neighbour lake Toba to the north the road to the lake is famous for its forty four bends oftering superb panoramas as it meaders down to the water’s edge. The lake is punctuated by pretty Moorish styled mosques, perhap designed by some long ago Arab traders who came to her shores. Datted about the lake are small and friendly villages. Bukittinggi 

Bukittinggi is the West Sumatra’s center of culture and tourism, nestled in the higlands north of the provincial capital of Padang. It is a pleasant two-hour drive (90 km) from Padang through the gorgeus Anai Valley up to Agam Plateu. Located 930 metres above sea level, it has a cool climate and is surrounded by tree volcanoes: Tandikat, Singgalang and Merapi. The central landmark is the town’s clocktower, reffered by the local people as Jam Gadang. It overlooks the market square, a beehive of activity and fantastic place to do some souvenir shopping. Also worth visiting is the Rumah Gadang Museum, a traditional extended family house built in the 19th century.

Mentawai Islands

Mentawai Islands is made up from four islands: Siberut, Sipora, Pagai Utara and Pagai Selatan. The people of these islands still live in comparative isolation, maintaining their age-old ways. Siberut is an area for trekking and visiting these ancient cultures, and its virgin rain forest, inhabited by a number of some rare monkey’s species. Beautiful co¬ral reefs are found offshore, and its wave is famous for surfing. The best season to visit is January to September.

Minangkabau

Maharaja Diraja and his followers landed on top of Mount Merapi (in the district of Tanah Datar) which was still surrounded by water. The face of the earth expanded, the number of inhabitants increased, and finally the early settlements were established in the district of Tanah Datar. And the nagari, the basic Minangkabau political organization, were founded. That was how the history of Alam Minangkabau begins, at least according to the tambo, the Minangkabau traditional historiography.

North Sumatra




Medan was one the site of a battlefield between the Aceh people and the neighboring Deli Kingdom. 
Medan is the capital of North Sumatra Province, a trading center and important harbor. 
Once Medan was part of the Deli Sultanate. What is historically most interesting is the Mesjid Besar. 
(Grand Mosque) and the Palace of the Sultan of Deli which has been restored to restored its past grandeur.
Medan's harbor town is called Belawan, which is the sea link to Penang Malaysia. LAKE TOBA - PARAPAT


Lake Toba

A. Overview 

Lake Toba is one of the largest lake in the world, and the largest and most popular in Indonesia. The lake was like a vast ocean about 100 kilometers x 30 kilometers. Amid the lake there is a large island, which is Samosir Island at an altitude of 1000 meters above sea level.

In the middle of Lake Toba, on Samosir Island is there popular natural attractions, the lake above the lake (Lake Sidihoni And Lake Aek Natonang); tourist attraction in the complex history of the tomb of King Sidabutar Tomok Village; and tourist complex architecture of traditional Batak house Toba Samosir. In Parapat, visitors who want to visit the island of Samosir to ride freight ferries depart every hour to Tomok Village, Samosir.

The town of Parapat is the main tourist resort and lies on the very shore of the famous 
Lake Toba. This lake is about 50 miles long and 16 miles across, with a depth 
about 1 .400 feet. In Parapat live Batak Toba and Batak Simalungun tribes, 
and are happy and easy going people. 
They are known for their lively and sentimental love songs.
Recreational sports in Parapat are among others swimming, Water skiing, 
motor boating, canoeing, fishing, and golf at Sally golf course (19 hotels) 
about 5 km from Parapat. Parapat is 176 from Medan and can be reached i
n 4 hours by bus. The climate in Parapat is cool, and dry, making Parapat 
an ideal palace to relax. Many hotels, bungalows, villas, 
resthousee welcome visitors. Small shops selling souvenirs such as 
"Ulos" (local woven cloths) and specific fruits local grown.

SAMOSIR ISLAND

The island of Samosir is right in the middle of lake Toba, covering area of 239 
square miles. This island is the original home of the fiercest but kind hearted 
Toba Bataks, It can be reached in half an hour by boat from Parapat. Visiting the 
village of Tomak, Tuk-tuk, Siallagan, Ambarita are recommended for traditional Batak
Toba houses, and local dances. This island has many hotels, bungalows and rest houses.
BARASTAGI

Berastagi, a tourist town is another lovely town located in the Karo highlands. 
The town is know for its plantations and various kinds of flower, vegetables and fruit, 
most famous of which is the "Marqisa" passion fruit.
It's 66 km southwest of Medan and is 4.594 feet above sea level. There is a pleasant 

colonial-style hotel with a golf course. Other new hotel can also be found from Gundalling 
Hill a clear view of Mt.Sibayak and Mt.Sinabung volcanoes can be seen.
JANGGA
Jangga is a village of native Bataks, located in the hills, on the main road to the other 
Batak communities living separately there , like Lumban Nabolon village, 
Tonga-tonga Sirait Uruk village, Jnaji Matogu village, sihubuk hubak  village, 
Siregar village, Sigiaol village, Silalahi Toruan Muara village and 
Tamak Sihatang village.
There are monuments of King Tambun and King Monurung, traditional houses,

cultural and other historical remains left by Batak Kings centuries ago. This natively 
unchanged Batak Village has complete ornamentation, and is often visited by domestic
and foreign visitors. Inn this place, visitors can watch young girl or old ladies weaving 
the beautiful ulos cloth inside the booths their principle livelihood beside agriculture.
SIPISO- PISO WATERFALL AND TONGGING

Tongging is place to see waterfall surrounded by beautiful sights in cool mountain air. It is 24 km from Kabanjahe, located at the north side of Lake Toba. The 360 feet waterfall is visible from a gazebo at one of the tops of hills.


BOHOROK

This places is for the adventurous, accessible through Sumatra's inland wilderness, 
crossing rivers and going over sleep hills. Area lies south of the Mount Leuser 
National Park,a rehabilitation center for orang utans in Bohorok, which was 
inaugurated in 1973, Orang utans living here are of Sumatra and Kalimantan origin.
PEMATANG SIANTAR

Pematang Siantar is the second largest city, lying 128 km to the South Medan. On the way, 
you will pass through many rubber, cocoa, palm oil, tobacco and tea plantations. 
This is the richest part of North Sumatra, because these plantation produce the main 
export commodities.
Then onward to Lake Toba you will see a vast stretch of land covered with thick forest, 

plantations. terrace ricefields, lush vegetarian, blue and green hills mountains.
GREAT BUKIT BARISAN FOREST PARK

Located at Tongkoh village, in the district of the Karo highlands, approximately 59 km 
from Medan. Formerly Tahura Bukit Barisan since 1916, known for its location called
"Arboretum Tongkoh Berastagi", however since 1989 renovated and renamed Great
Bukit Barisan Forest Park.
Found there is the zoological museum and a gazebo with Koro ornaments designed 

on the roof, Painted with various writing of typical welcome greeting in Tapanuli, 
which is "Haras"
SOUTH TAPANULI

It lies in the southern part of North Sumatra, bordering the provinces of West Sumatra, 
bordering the provinces of West Sumatra and Riau. This region has a  population of 
approximately 900.000. It lies on the way to west to west Sumatra overland. 
The sceneries are attractive all the way. Same of the tourist objects are Candi Portibi,
Dolak Simago-mago, Pakantan, Husar Tolang, Sibanggar, Adian Lungun Nihara.
There are also hot springs and a good hotel available at Tar Sibohi.
This district is known for its ceramics and handicraft. The Portibi temple is at 

Padang Bolak, 78 km from Padang Sidempuan, or 581 km from Medan. There are 
cultural remnants of s Hindu temple kingdom of Panai, founded in 1039 A.d.

NIAS ISLAND         

This island lies off West Sumatra in the Indian Ocean. The village of Bowomataluo and Hilisimae are curios place to visit, where visitors can see performances of traditional war-dances and thrilling high-jump sports, I,e. people making dangerous leaps over 2 meter-high stones. Typical scenes are dancers clad in traditional costumes with bird feathers on their heads, a hall for the Chief of Tribe built on wooden logs with stones chairs weighing up to 18 tons. There are daily flights serving Medan and Nias island.




West Sumatra

South Sumatra








South Sumatra Province is situated on the eastern side of Bukit Barisan mountain range South Sumatra province is relatively flat, nevertheless fertile, as numerous rivers crisscross and meander through out the region. Palembang is its capital city and as the gateway to the province, lies right on the banks of the great Musi River, 60 km upstream and navigable by oceangoing vessels. Inevitable of course, were the interacting forces of the two different cultures at the time, which nowadays are still noticeable as consequences of the past.

The visitors can easily reach South Sumatra by air through four major airports at Palembang, Pangkal Pinang, Bangka and Belitung islands, all having direct connections with Medan, Batam, Padang, Jakarta, and not long from now with Singapore too. South Sumatra Province is divided among 8 regencies, 2 municipals and 3 administrative towns with Palempang as its capital city.

The humidity of south Sumatra province is 78%. The rainfall range is variation between 2,000 - 3,000 mm per year and an average wind velocity of 3.23 km per hour. And the temperature ranges between 21.8o C and 32.2o C.

Demography
A migration flow to this province is supported by the existence of heavy plantation exertion, mining and transmigration program. The population density of this province is 58,8 people per Km2 (1994). Compared to the average national population growth amounted to 2.144% per year, this province was on the lower level with 1.10% per year.
